The General Study Program at Shandong University employs developed counties' education systems and criteria, and provides the first two years of general university study leading to an undergraduate degree acceptable in most English speaking universities worldwide. This supplements the shortage of degree education in China while simultaneously promoting the export of Canadian higher education.
 
The GSP provides many advantages to Chinese students. The program actually divides four years of degree education into two parts, general study and major study. The general study portion may cover a specific discipline, yet it offers a broad variety of courses giving students who complete the GSP more flexibility in choosing future majors.

Most senior high school graduates are not prepared to consider all majors in all disciplines and thus find it difficult to confirm their lifelong major at that time. However,  in China, if a student is admitted into a certain major in a university, he/she is unable to change his/her major due to the restriction of "quota of degree pre-assigned" imposed by Chinese central government. The GSP of Shandong University has successfully solved this problem and brings great benefits to its students.   
 
The education goal of the GSP of Shandong University is to provide universal education meeting international standards.  It offers a comprehensive general study program leading to an undergraduate degree, and effectively pioneers a way to overcome the education barriers existing in China. 

The General Study Program employs the most highly qualified and professional teaching staff among all other schools in Shandong University. All of the teachers in the GSP have solid English language skills as they must use only original English version textbooks and all written items, including syllabus, textbooks, tests, homework and blackboard writings, are instructed in English.

 There are approximately 40 teachers working in the GSP, including 20 professors, 4 associate professors, 6 lecturers and 9 foreign ESL teachers.
All teachers are highly educated with strong academic backgrounds. Many of them also have extensive overseas education and research experience from top institutes such as, Harvard (USA), Oxford (UK), University of British Columbia (Canada) and University of Regina (Canada).
 

Shandong University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China. Shandong University was founded in 1901 and was the second national university established after Jingshi University (the Metropolitan University) in the country. Recently, the Ministry of Education approved the university as a "national key comprehensive university" and in 2001, listed it among the top 21 nationally constructed first-class universities.
Situated in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province, Shandong University covers an area of 3.8 square kilometers. The province is located on the east coast of China near the south end of the Yellow River. Not only is it one of the most economically developed coastal provinces in China, but Shandong is also a major contributor to ancient Chinese culture-- renowned as the auspicious birthplace of Qilu culture.

Shandong University consists of 31 colleges and a graduate school. Courses are offered in 11 main academic disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, literature, history, natural sciences, engineering, management, medicine, education and military. There are 104 undergraduate degree programs, 209 master's degree programs, 127 doctoral degree programs, and 15 post-doctorate mobile stations. In addition, there are 7 professional master's degree programs in law, business management, engineering, clinical medicine, public health, dentistry and public administration respectively. The student population totals to about 95,000, of which 40,978 are fulltime students, 10,755 are postgraduate students, and over 1,000 are international students.

Shandong University embraces an abundance of scientific research facilities, a strong teaching staff, and favorable studying environment. At the university there exist 35 national, provincial, and ministerial key academic disciplines; 2 national key research labs; 20 provincial and ministerial key research labs; a national engineering and technology promotion center; 19 provincial technology research centers; 4 national basic scientific research and personnel development bases; 4 social science key research bases approved by Ministry of Education; and 4 national fundamental science personnel development bases. The university also has a group of reputed scholars known home and abroad; of these 922 are professors. There are 29 academicians (including adjunct academicians) who are members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Three general hospitals, including Qilu Hospital and 12 teaching hospitals are affiliated with the university. Over 175 experimental labs, teaching and research facilities are well equipped. The university library houses a collection of over 5,600, 000 volumes.

Shandong University is a higher learning institution open to the world. Over the years, Shandong University has established a broad international network for educational cooperation and has signed exchange agreements with over 70 universities from over 50 countries. The university remains active in academic cooperation and exchanges with over 100 educational and research institutions worldwide. The university has become an important education base for international students. Since 1980, Shandong University has received over 10,000 students from over 60 countries.

The Education Committee of Shandong Province of China approved the General Study Program (GSP) at Shandong University under the cooperation of Canadian National Education Exchange Center (CNEEC) and Shandong University (SDU) in 2001. 

Shandong University follows the GSP’s general curriculum and provides a high quality team of instructors, while offering more than 35 university courses covering the disciplines of Economics/Commerce and Science/Engineering, and providing the first two years of an internationally acceptable undergraduate degree. The GSP at SDU also provides the students with approximately 1,300 hours of intensive English training to meet international English standards. Qualified students who complete the courses provided by the GSP are eligible to apply to Canadian universities for further study towards an undergraduate degree based on their academic achievement. The GSP at SDU is an ideal program for students who are interested in further study in Canada.  

More than 2,812 students have completed their study in the GSP and were admitted as transfer students by more than thirty-seven Canadian universities up to 2021
