Introduction

SWJT-2013
The Education Committee of Sichuan Province in China also approved, following Shandong University, the General Study Program (GSP) at Soutjwest Jiaotong University under the cooperation of Canadian National Education Exchange Center (CNEEC) and Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), in 2002.
Southwest Jiaotong University also follows the GSP’s general curriculum. It offers approximately 35 university courses covering the disciplines of Economics/Commerce and Science/Engineering, with about 1,300 hours of intensive English training, and provides the first two years of an internationally acceptable undergraduate degree. Students who complete the courses in the GSP and achieve acceptable academic standing are eligible to apply to Canadian universities to further their degree studies.
Over 160 students have completed their study in the GSP and were admitted as transfer students by twenty-two Canadian universities up to 2008. Currently about 158 students are studying in the GSP at SWJTU; they were admitted in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Outline of SWJTU

Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) was founded in Shanhaiguan in 1896. Having been relocated a number of times; it is presently situated in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan Province. It is a key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education, and has developed into an engineering-highlighted multi-disciplinary university incorporating science, management, economics, liberal arts and law.
SWJTU covers an area of 169 hectares: the Chengdu campus consists of 76 hectares and the Emei campus 93 hectares . The total area of the school grounds is approximately 670,000 square meters.

With over one hundred years of history, SWJTU has established a complete higher education system consisting of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate, continuing education and distance education programs. The university has 11 schools, 38 departments, 32 undergraduate specialties, master's programs in 58 fields, doctorate programs in 24 fields and 6 postdoctoral centers. There are around 23,000 students on campus now, SWJTU has a high-qualified staff with 1,400 teachers, including almost 900 professors and associate professors, 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Science, and 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. There are also more than 100 visiting professors from other educational institutes within and outside China presently employed by the university.

In its 100 years of steady development, SWJTU has cultivated over seventy thousand engineers, technicians and managers; a few of the most notable being Mao Yisheng, Zhu Kezhen and Lin Tongyan. However, may other world-famous experts and scholars, including more than forty academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering
have either studied or taught at the university. Furthermore, SWJTU is well known for its rigorous scholarship and has long been considered to be an excellent center of higher education pursued by many young students at home and abroad.

SWJTU is a center of both education and research. It has 3 key disciplines at the state level, and 17 at the ministerial and provincial level. Located at the university are also 16 research institutes and 15 research institutes involved in cross disciplines. Traction Power Lab, the only key state laboratory of the national transportation system, is based at SWJTU. There are also 10 key laboratories at the ministerial level and another 66 teaching and research laboratories. During the "Eighth Five-year Plan", over 180 scientific research projects have won prizes awarded by the state, the province and the Railway Ministry. Over 9,000 research papers have been published in academic journals within and outside the nation. At the end of 2000, the first man-loading high temperature super-conducting maglev test vehicle in the world was born at SWJTU.

Features

The General Study Program at Southwest Jiaotong University is an important project which provides top quality international higher education in Sichuan Province of China.  The GSP maintains a highly efficient operating system and the Education Committee of Sichuan Province has paid serious attention to its development. Furthermore, for the purpose of enhancing management and the efficiency of operations, the President of SWJTU has taken the position of Chairman of the Management Committee, the body that conducts the management and operation of the GSP as organized by CNEEC and SWJTU.

Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) is located in Chengdu City of Sichuan Province, in the center of the undeveloped western district in China, where there is a large shortage in higher education. Although many students would like to study abroad as an alternative, they face many difficulties in reaching that goal. The GSP at SWJTU, by means of standardization and internationalization of education, and with no limitation of "quota of degree pre-assigned" imposed by the Chinese central government, paves a successful road to pursue further education for these students.

The educational goal of the GSP of Southwest Jiaotong University is to provide international standard university education; offering a comprehensive general study program leading to an undergraduate degree, and effectively pioneering a way to overcome the education barriers existing in China.

Outcomes

The General Study Program is running well in Southwest Jiaotong University. There are about 20 experienced teachers in the GSP, including 6 professors, 7 associate professors, 5 lecturers and 2 foreign ESL teachers. The extensive education, solid academic background and fluent English of these teachers keep the GSP's education quality at a high level.

A total of 865 students were admitted to the GSP from 2002 to 2017.  For students admitted, the highest score on the Chinese National University Entry Examination (CNUEE) was 624, and the average score was around 425. After completing the GSP, the highest GPA was 95%, and the average GPA was 76%, with a highest paper-based TOEFL score of 613 and an average of about 491;a highest Internet-based TOEFL score of 101 and an average of about 59.

Presently, 58 students who were admitted  in seventeen Canadian universities. The students who were admitted in 2016 will complete their study in the GSP in July 2018. They have been already admitted by several Canadian universities as transfer students in Febuary 2018.
